General Information
Registration
You can register to vote or update your registration information:
- online
- by mail
- in person at your elections office
- at some public assistance offices and motor vehicle offices

Polling places are open from 7am to 7pm on Election Day.

Early Voting
Any voter may may vote in person in the county election office starting the Tuesday before election day, or up to 20 days before the election, depending on the county. Contact your election office to inquire about early voting options in your area.
Absentee Voting
Kansas does not offer all mail elections when a candidate appears on the ballot. Advance Voting by Mail is only available when there is a question on the ballot at the local level. You do not need an excuse to advance vote by mail ballot. However, you do need to apply to county election offices to have an advanced by mail ballot mailed to you for each election. If your signature on the application or on your ballot does not match your signature on your voter registration, you may be contacted for verification purposes.
If you have someone else return your ballot for you, this person will simply sign a statement that no undue influence has been exercised on you and your directions have been followed.

Eligibility Requirements
You are eligible to vote in Kansas if you:
- Are a U.S. citizen
- Are a resident of Kansas
- at 17 years of age provided you will be 18 by the next general election.
You must have registered at least 20 days before an election to be eligible to vote.
You are NOT eligible to vote in Kansas if:
- You are currently serving a sentence including incarceration, parole, probation, or extended supervision for a felony conviction
- A judge has specifically ruled that you are not able to vote.
Restorative Requirements
- If you have completed a felony sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, period of probation, or you have been pardoned, then you are immediately eligible to register to vote
You may preregister to vote in Kansas
- if you will be 18 by Election Day
If you are a student, you are eligible to vote in Kansas if:
- You reside in Kansas but are attending college in another state
- You reside in another state but attend college in Kansas
- You provide a student ID from an accredited school in this state
Identification Requirements
Voter Registration
To register to vote in Kansas you should provide one of the following:
- Your Kansas Driver's License Number
- Your Kansas ID Number
If you do not have these IDs, you may provide:
- Last Four Digits of your Social Security Number

Voting In-Person
In Kansas, you need to show a valid ID to vote. You can use any ID from this list:
- Valid US Passport
- Valid Government Employee ID
- Public Assistance ID
- Valid Military ID
- Valid Kansas Driver's License
- License to Carry Concealed Weapon or Firearm
- Valid Kansas Non-driver's ID
- Valid Tribal ID
- Valid Student ID from State School
An expiration date does not need to be shown on the photo ID. However, if there is an expiration date on the ID, it must not be expired. ID is also required for Advance Voting in Person which is available up to 20 days before an election. If an advance voter does not provide identification, the county election officer may issue a provisional ballot to the voter. The provisional ballot will not be considered valid until the voter submits their photographic identification to before the county canvass. Eligibility Requirements
Overseas Voters
U.S. citizens living abroad have the right to vote as absentee voters, provided they are eligible to vote in their state. If you are living outside of the U.S. permanently, indefinitely, or temporarily, your voting rights stay with you, even if you never voted when you lived in the U.S. To vote from overseas:
- Complete and send an overseas voter registration/ballot request form to your election office in the U.S. This is one specific form that will register you as an overseas voter and request your absentee ballot – simultaneously.
Many states allow children who were born overseas, but never lived in the U.S., to use their U.S. parents’ last residence address to register.
Military Voters
Service members and their eligible family members living outside their voting jurisdiction (within or outside the U.S.) are able to vote as absentee voters.
- If you are a service member, or an eligible family member, there is a single form to file for both voter registration and ballot request. It is often called the “Federal Post Card Application” or the FPCA form. This form must be re-filed with your election office each time you change location.
To vote as a service member or eligible family member:
- Complete and send a voter registration/ballot request form “FPCA” to your election office in the U.S. It is the same form in all states.

Voting Overseas
U.S. citizens living overseas may register and request a ballot using the overseas voter registration/ballot request form. You will have the following identification options when completing the form:
- U.S. State or Territory or District Issued ID
- Option to Indicate that you do not have the Requested ID
- Last 4 Digits of your Social Security Number
Voting Military
Service members and their dependents may register and request a ballot using the federal voter registration/ballot request form ("FPCA"). You will have the following identification options when completing the form:
